Upon his Visit to Germany, the Secretary General of the Sudan Peoples’ Liberation Movement-North calls that any move by the International Community to provide Economic Aid and Debt Relief be linked to Improvements to the Khartoum Regime’s Human Rights Record, ending the War, and the Resolution of the Governance Crisis in North Sudan.

On a two-day visit to Berlin, the Secretary General of the Sudan Peoples’ Liberation Movement held a series of important meetings with senior officials in the German Government, Parliamentarians, heads of research centres and church leaders. Continue reading

حذّر حزب الأمة القومي المؤتمر الوطني من خطورة مآلات الأوضاع حال عدم التوصل لاتفاق حول الأجندة الوطنية التي يطرحها الأمة كمخرج من الأزمات والتحديات التي تعاني منها البلاد وشدد على ضرورة أن يتواضع الجميع لايجاد حلول قومية للمشكلات المزمنة والمتستعصية منبهاً الى أن الحلول الجزئية والمؤقتة ستفاقم الأزمة والاوضاع الداخلية وقد تعود للانفجار وقال نائب رئيس الحزب فضل الله برمة ناصر لـ «آخر لحظة» أمس إن الاوضاع في السودان تزداد تعقيداً وعلى جميع الأطراف الاعتراف والانتباه لذلك مشيراً الى أنه لا مخرج من ذلك إلا بالاتفاق على الأجندة الوطنية لأنها المخرج الوحيد حتى لا تنفجر الأوضاع بسبب الرؤية الأحادية للقضايا، وفي سياق آخر نفى برمة وجود أي خلافات داخل أجهزة حزب الأمة بسبب رفض المشاركة في الحكومة الجديدة. Eighty killed in South Sudan rebel attack

ABOUT 80 people, including 60 rebels, were killed on Saturday when government forces in the oil-rich South Sudanese Unity state repelled an attack by rebel militia, officials said.

“There was a militia attack at 5 or 6 o’clock in the morning in Mayom county,” said Unity Information Minister Gideon Gatpan Thoar.

Thoar said rebels, most of them fighting under the banner of the South Sudan Liberation Army (SSLA), attacked Mayom town and that the majority of the civilian casualties were residents gunned down while “running for shelter.” Continue reading

Darfur: New chief of UN peacekeeping makes first visit to field operation

30 October 2011 – The new head of United Nations peacekeeping today paid his first visit to one of the 16 field operations worldwide, choosing the largest — the joint African Union-UN mission (UNAMID) in the troubled Sudanese region of Darfur.

Herve Ladsous, Under-Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations, met with senior local officials, members of civil society and UNAMID staff as he travelled around the north of the vast and arid region on Sudan”s western flank. Continue reading

1,500 Zaghawa tribes-people displaced

Sudan hands out 50 more gold exploration licenses

KHARTOUM (Reuters) – African gold producer Sudan has handed out 50 more licenses to 73 firms to explore gold and other minerals, state news agency SUNA said on Sunday.

Sudan is trying to expand its small gold production to compensate for the loss of most of its oil reserves to South Sudan which became independent in July. Continue reading

Exiled S. Sudan opposition boss returns home

The leader of South Sudan’s largest opposition party has returned home after months in exile since the euphoric independence of the country in July.

Dr Lam Akol, the chairman of the splinter Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-Democratic Change (SPLM-DC), a breakaway faction of the ruling Sudan People’s Liberation Movement, who returned home on Sunday, allegedly feared arrest by the security of the infant nation. Continue reading

University of Nyala Students Demonstrate Against Harsh Fines

SUDAN – On Friday the 29th of October, Dlearning students of the University of Nyala organised sit-in protests against fines which were proposed by the University authorities. These fines would be imposed on students who failed to submit their research papers on time.

The students, who study through the University of Nyala’s faculties of Economics, Education and Law, were taking action against fines which would cost one of them between 45 and 480 Sudanese pounds ($16.80 and $179.25). The university will impose a fine such as this upon a student who fails to present their research paper by the October 30th deadline. The students filed a complaint on the grounds that fines of this size would be beyond their financial capabilities. Continue reading

Sudanese army denies presence of JEM leader in Darfur

October 30, 2011 (KHARTOUM) — The Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) on Saturday said that the leader of the Justice and Equality Movement, Khalil Ibrahim, is not inside the country after his departure from Tripoli.

Khalil who was in Libya since May 2010, left the troubled country after the fall of Gaddafi’s regime and returned to Darfur through the neighboring Chad last September after leaving Tripoli through Niger. Continue reading

Press Release on Abyei

It seems that Council members are close to agreeing on a press statement requesting the redeployment of Sudanese and South Sudanese forces from the Abyei area. Apparently the press statement was circulated by the US yesterday (27 October) and most members are in agreement on the need to highlight the security challenges of the situation in Abyei. It seems that a number of members have been concerned about the complexity of the situation on the ground which has made it difficult for the Council to be proactive on a number of Sudan related issues. Briefing and Consultations on Darfur

On Tuesday, (25 October) Council members are scheduled to hold consultations on the Secretary-General’s most recent report on the UN-AU Hybrid Operation in Darfur (UNAMID). It seems that Hervé Ladsous, Under Secretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations, will brief on the report’s findings, including developments on security, political, human rights, and humanitarian issues in Darfur. (Resolution 2003, which renewed UNAMID on 29 July, requires the Secretary-General to report to the Council every ninety days on progress achieved in implementing the mission’s mandate.) Arman says economic assistance to Sudan must be conditioned on end of war

October 29, 2011 (KHARTOUM) – The secretary-general of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement (SPLM-N), Yasir Arman, has called on the international community to withhold economic assistance to Sudan until the country’s government ends the war in South Kordofan and Blue Nile.

Arman made his call during a two-day visit to Berlin where he met a number of German officials and representatives of political parties and lobby groups. Continue reading

Detained Eritrean journalist faces possible forced repatriation from Sudan

Reporters Without Borders expresses its profound concern after the arrest on 24 October of the Eritrean journalist Jamal Osman Hamad in Khartoum and calls on the Sudanese authorities to release him.

 

In the light of warmer relations between the governments of Eritrea and Sudan, the press freedom organization is also concerned about the fate of Eritrean journalists and human rights campaigners who have taken refuge in Sudan. Continue reading

إعادة أكثر من 300 شخص إلى حيث يُرجح أن يتعرضوا للاضطهاد

(جنيف) – قالت هيومن رايتس ووتش اليوم إن السلطات السودانية زاد من معدلات ترحيله للإريتريين إلى بلدهم دون السماح لهم بتقديم طلبات اللجوء. في 17 أكتوبر/تشرين الأول 2011 سلم السودان أكثر من 300 إريتري إلى الجيش الإريتري دون فحص طلباتهم باللجوء، مما استدعى الإدانة العلنية من المفوضية السامية للأمم المتحدة لشؤون اللاجئين.

يأتي هذا الترحيل الجماعي بعد عشرات الحالات من عمليات الترحيل غير القانونية من قبل السودان منذ مايو/أيار بحق ملتمسي لجوء إريتريين وإريتريين حُرموا من تقديم طلبات اللجوء. Continue reading
